What is an STI?
STI stands for ‘Sexually Transmitted Infection’. STIs are contagious diseases that you can contract through unprotected sex.
When should I get an STI test?
Have you had unprotected sex, are you starting a new relationship, do you have symptoms of an STI, or are you in a high-risk group? Then it might be wise to get an STI test. A test is the only way to be sure.
Where can I get an STI test?
The general practitioner is the designated place where you can get an STI test. Our general practice offers you the opportunity to carry out an STI test discreetly and in a trusted environment. The GP can explain, answer questions, and advise which test is useful.
If you prefer not to go to your GP, an STI self-test can be an alternative. In that case, take the test guide. Based on the result, you can easily and quickly order the correct STI test online. It is exactly the same test used by the GP. So the STI tests are equally reliable. Please note that STI tests may come with a cost.
The STI clinic of the GGD is for people who are at clearly increased risk of an STI. This includes men who have unprotected sex with men, people who visit sex workers or work in prostitution themselves, and people from areas where HIV and hepatitis are more common. These individuals can get tested through the GGD/STI clinic or be referred by the GP. The GP can make a good risk assessment.
How does it work?
As a man, you provide urine for an STI test. For women, the GP or the patient themselves collects test material using a swab. We send the material to the laboratory. You can request the results from our practice.
You will not receive an invoice for the consultation with the GP. However, keep in mind that the test itself may involve costs.
